Why
do some people not have dreams?
An article written in Psychology Today explains that in order to actually understand why one would not dream, we
would have to follow them around over a long period of time and record that
persons REM sleep. With that being said, this article goes into discussing the
possibility for ancient background of cultures that never had dreams.
I don’t believe there is are a
specific culture of people who do not dream. People either do not remember their
dreams, or they are lacking some type of conscious stability. Is it possible the individuals who do not
dream, relieve this conscious problem by day dreaming more often? Dreaming comes in many different shapes and forms so it is hard to examine the true reason behind not dreaming. I think most people do dream, they just don't remember the unimportant messages their brains are expressing.
Here is a video discussing why some
people may not remember dreaming.
What are your thoughts on not dreaming? Is there a time period you felt you were lacking more dreams than often? I feel as though my dreams have always been constant and unimportant, so my brain filters the good dreams from the bad. Let me know your thoughts on the subject, and thanks for reading!

ReplyDeleteThe topic in this blog is something that I think even science will never figure out. We as humans never remember about the good dreams or a dream that we had it’s always the bad ones that stand out from all the dreams we have. I do agree with you that culture has nothing to do with what we dream and has nothing to do with if we dreamed or not. It’s just the human brain that allows you to consume or forget the dream. Do you think that we will ever figure out why we forget about our dreams or why we remember only certain ones?

Jessica,
ReplyDeleteThis post kind of stopped me in my tracks. Is it possible that someone may NOT dream?
Of course, we all know that we tend to forget our dreams even when we really wish to remember them. Also, probably many of us remember periods of time when we went to bed, slept through the night and did not register even an inkling of a dream. But does it mean that we really did not dream or just that our consciousness didn't register what was engaging our brain when we were sleeping?
The whole idea that someone may not be dreaming was so novel to me that I had to admit that I had never thought about such a possibility. But why not? As far as we know, we only assume that everyone dreams because we do. Do we know any people who NEVER remember their dreams? Is it because their memory very effectively truncates what they consider to be irrelevant or is it because they really DON'T dream?
It would be great if you could discover some academic discussions on the subject. Maybe there is a division of opinions within the neuroscientist community regarding this question. It would be interesting to find out more of what has been researched, with all today's advances in neurological imaging.
