What is day dreaming?
It is very common to let the mind shut
off to a point of deep concentration, a break from society and truly let your
imagination wonder. An article written in The New Yorker states, people let
their mind wonder 47 percent of the time they are awake. While going into more
recent studies, this article gives an idea that a day dream is a way of noticing
thoughts generated by our unconscious.
I can agree with this because I believe daydreaming is a way
for our mind to truly sit back and relax. Most articles I found on daydreaming
were on the negative side, straying away from the common core and exclaiming
ways to get rid of these unconscious behaviors.
While
it can be distracting, day dreaming doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.
I remember in high school, I would always get in trouble for day dreaming, or
not paying attention in class. This aspect of day dreaming is probably frowned
upon by many school goers. After thinking about the reason behind all of my day
dreaming I came to the conclusion that even when I am not paying attention, or
day dreaming, you cannot force a person to focus. The mind controls all of the
actions in our body, and I believe daydreaming needs to be embraced as much as a
bodily function. We can only imagine what the unconscious mind holds. If daydreaming
is a form of relaxation for the mind, I think we should embrace it. What is so horrible about letting the mind wonder for a few moments?
I found a video from Huffpostlive discussing excessive daydreaming and the pros and cons for such things. Enjoy and let me know your thoughts on the subject!

Hey Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI found this post to be very interesting. I often find myself daydreaming when bored or driving. I must admit that I've always thought of it as a bad habit, but one that wasn't so bad I needed to make a conscious effort to change. I've mostly felt this way because I've found it creeping in when I'm supposed to be focused on homework or class or a presentation of some sort. I was interested to see that you referred to it as a form of relaxation and a way for the mind to rest. I like that idea because I do feel that at times it can be very therapeutic and even necessary to keep yourself sane. I also feel that many times some of my goals in life arise from daydreams where I question why something isn't possible and I set my mind to something I've dreamed about doing. It is just as healthy to have dreams and put in the work to chase them. I wonder how much of a comparison there is between learning disorders in children and daydreaming. May be a connection to consider looking at. I look forward to more posts!

ReplyDeleteThis blog brings a great point upon day dreaming and creates different views about the subject. I too agree with you that day dreaming is kind of like a form of relaxation for the brain. I find myself doing it more than I would like to admit but I think it’s great to let the mind wonder. The thought of letting the mind run free and not focus on anything is something we tend to forget about. We are always on the move and when we stop to let the mind free or daydream it’s almost like committing a crime to our brain. Do you think that if we stop to daydream or lose focus, it will be something that we as human do as a bad habit?

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI frequently find myself daydreaming. I don't necessarily think that it is a bad thing, but there are times when doing so has had negative consequences for me if I am supposed to be paying attention. Daydreaming is definitely something I enjoy doing because it allows me to either ponder about a deep situation or thrive in my fantasies. It has allowed me to think about difficult problems that I am trying to figure out the answers to, and it has both worked in my favor as well as backfired. I do believe that daydreaming is a necessary aspect to have as a person, but too much of it may be bad, and may cause or be related to procrastination. Nevertheless, I doubt that nobody has ever not daydreamed.

I never thought of daydreaming like this. I have always heard that it is a bad thing and that it is something to try and avoid because we are "losing focus". I actually agree with you; if it is a form of relaxation it should be embraced for sure. Especially in today's fact paced society we are so wrapped up in technology. Day dreaming should be viewed as a positive thing to keep people sane. It could decrease stress levels!
